About us

Since 2003 when they registered the name and the URL, The Brand Strategy Group has been thinking about Hawaiian Tap.  At first, the concept was going to be a riff on bottled waters in general – given that Coke and Pepsi had really jumped in full force with Aquafina and Dasani – and most bottled waters were actually processed (in one way or another) municipal water.

When Brand Strategy Group partner Gloria Garvey moved to Hawaii 36 years ago, her then husband always reminded her that Hawaiian tap water was the very best tasting water in the world.  Partner Brook Gramann grew up here knowing that.  So Hawaiian Tap was originally intended to be a bottled-water-way of saying bottled water is a joke.

Like so many “good ideas,” Hawaiian Tap-as-bottled-water got put on the shelf – and as it turns out, bottled water is no joke, but a serious problem because of the gazillions of plastic containers that litter our streets and use up precious space – especially in an Island state – in landfills.

The Brand Strategy Group thinks its time to get the rest of us on board.  So Hawaiian Tap, with its slogan “Bottle Your Own” is back as a badge of commitment to show everyone that its time to get real, and stop buying those plastic bottles.

It takes more than 47 million gallons of oil to produce plastic water bottles for Americans every year.  Eliminating those bottles would be like taking 100,000 cars off the road and 1 billion pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.  Just because ours is a small state doesn’t mean the problem is any better here.  We have warm weather year round, and millions of tourists who buy and drink, and throw away millions of plastic water bottles.

Bottling and shipping water is the least efficient method of water delivery ever invented. The energy we waste using bottled water would be enough to power 190,000 homes. But refilling your water bottle from the tap requires no expenditure of energy, and zero waste of resources.

Hawaiian Tap is built on the premise “that everyone who is anyone” knows that Hawaii has the best tap water in the world.  It acknowledges upfront – without saying it – that water is a commodity and that non-carbonated bottled waters, no matter where they come from, taste virtually the same.  So why not bottle the best?  “Tap” water from Hawaii.

It is a brand made in Hawaii, for Hawaii. Help preserve Hawaii’s environment drink the best tap water in the world.
